So you love vintage? How about a Day-Date that’s about a hundred million years old?
We took some liberty with the dating, but the spectacular Ammonite dial on this Day-Date certainly is prehistoric. Ammonites were shelled nautiloids, a class of sea creatures that went extinct during a mass extinction event that marked the end of the Cretaceous period 66 million years ago.
The fossilized remains of these extinct animals are the backdrop for one of the most enigmatic dials Rolex has ever created for the Day-Date range: deep black rock interspersed with a flurry of white details. This particular ammonite dial is devoid of any indices, save for applied 18k yellow gold Arabic numerals at the 6 and 9 o’clock positions that are set with a brilliant cut diamond. As is customary for such precious stone dials, the hand-set does not feature any luminous material.
The reference 18208 Day-Date features the 36 mm 18k yellow gold Oyster case, but forgoes the classic fluted bezel for the more smooth domed variety. The toned looks of the bezel are the perfect accompaniment for this particular configuration as they humbly cede attention to the exquisite dial.
This ref. 18208 dates back to 1999 and comes on an 18k yellow gold President bracelet. The watch is in excellent condition and is accompanied by the original box and papers, which indicate that the watch was sold in 2002.
Introduction
The very essence of luxurious time-keeping, provided with a day and date function. It was launched in 1956 as a niche model and was only produced in precious metals (yellow-, white- and rose gold or platinum). Its retail price was way costlier than any other Rolex model. However, due to its popularity among a lot of prestigious people, for example presidents (hence, its nickname), it became Rolex’ flagship model. Over the years this model has enjoyed associations with a wide variety of people, from world leaders, athletes, celebrities and mafiosi (like Tony Soprano). Regardless of the differences, they all had one thing in common: being successful in their area of expertise. Therefore, to this day the Day-Date is still synonymous with luxury, prestige, style and success. With exception of the most modern models, the Day-Date comes in at 36mm.
