This exceptional howlite dial comes with Phillips auction provenance!Indeed, this Day-Date with an uncommon stone dial was sold by Phillips in the spring of 2019 at the Geneva Watch Auction Nine. Curiously, the Phillips lot essay describes the watch as having a marble dial. This is a common mistake as Rolex has never made a marble dial. The dial on this Day-Date is in fact made of howlite, a borate mineral that indeed has a lovely marble-like white appearance with gray, black, or brown streaks. This ref. 18208 Day-Date is executed in an 18k yellow gold Oyster case, measuring in at a classic 36 mm. The 18k yellow gold domed bezel and matching riveted Oyster bracelet give the watch a slightly sportier appearance than a typical Day-Date. The lovely howlite dial features applied 18k yellow-gold Roman numerals and a closed 18k yellow-gold handset. The watch dates back to 1998 and houses the caliber 3155 automatic movement with a convenient double quickset function that allows the day and date to be adjusted separately. The watch is in exceptional condition, with a tight bracelet and unpolished case that even features the original green Rolex sticker attached to the case back! Accompanying the watch is the original box, punched papers, Rolex tag, as well as the Phillips auction tag.

Rolex Day-DateIn 1956 Rolex introduced one the most iconic watches ever made: the Day-Date. The Day-Date was the first waterproof self-winding chronometer certified wristwatch with a day and date function. And to top it off, it was only available in gold or platinum! Rolex also designed a new three-link bracelet, known as the ‘President,’ to pair with this special watch. With exception of the most modern executions, the Day-Date comes exclusively in a 36 mm case.
