As we often say, vintage doesn’t necessarily equate with age. After all, a crappy old watch is just that: a crappy, old watch. Vintage is rather about aesthetics and timelessness. This Submariner is the quintessential example of a youngtimer vintage watch. If the ref. 5513 is the iconic vintage Sub, then the 14060 is its undisputed heir. Launched in 1989, the 14060 combines the best of both worlds. It combines the classic slender 40 mm Oyster case with drilled lugs—a far cry from the bulky maxi cases of today—with the no-nonsense two-line ‘no-date’ dial. It also sports an aluminium bezel insert that, unlike the modern ceramic bezels, often fades beautifully over time. On the other hand, it sports a modern glossy black dial with white-gold applied hour markers and, of course, a sturdy sapphire crystal. The watch we have now is a 14060M, with the ‘M’ indicating Rolex’ improved cal. 3130 self-winding movement housed in a sharp case with the original bevelled edges still present. The matching Oyster bracelet is in excellent condition with minimal scratches or stretch between the links.
Introduction
Rolex SubmarinerIn 1953, Rolex introduced one of the world’s first wrist watches geared specifically towards divers: the Submariner. Rolex had to confront a number of challenges when designing its first dive watch. The watch obviously had to withstand significant amounts of pressure and had to accurately measure time spent underwater, which the first Submariner achieved by featuring a 330ft/100m depth rating and a rotating diving bezel. It also had to be easily legible in conditions of reduced visibility yet aesthetically pleasing. Hence, the Sub’s iconic large white tritium hour markers and Mercedes hands set against a contrasting black dial. The Submariner is the most iconic and desirable luxury watch of all time and has been adopted by luminaries such as Jacques Cousteau, Che Guevara, and none other than James Bond. Our favorite Bond, Sean Connery, wore a big crown Sub in the 1962 classic ‘Dr. No’. The watch was also featured in ‘Goldfinger’ and ‘Thunderball’.
