There’s something perversely decadent about a full gold dive watch. It’s like saying: “who cares if my arm gets chomped by a shark, I can afford a new watch anyway.”Rolex introduced the first gold Submariner, the ref. 1680/8, in 1969 with either a black or blue dial and bezel combo. Curiously, the blue dials tend to discolor much stronger than the black ones leading to some beautiful patinated watches. So too on this ref. 16618 from 1991. While the bezel has retained its vibrant blue color, the dial has patinated to a rich and regal purple hue. The effects of time can further be seen on the tritium luminous compound in the hour markers and hands, which have turned a pleasing creamy color. The 40 mm Oyster case is executed in a rich 18k yellow gold alloy and is attached to a matching 18k yellow gold Oyster bracelet with luxuriously polished center links and a sporty 18k yellow gold safety clasp. Of course, it comes with a sturdy and scratch resistant sapphire crystal, it’s a tool watch after all!The watch is in overall great condition with some light scratches here and there and some signs of polishing on the clasp. This 16618 is the perfect option if you love wearing rather than babying your gold watches!
Introduction
Rolex SubmarinerIn 1953, Rolex introduced one of the world’s first wrist watches geared specifically towards divers: the Submariner. Rolex had to confront a number of challenges when designing its first dive watch. The watch obviously had to withstand significant amounts of pressure and had to accurately measure time spent underwater, which the first Submariner achieved by featuring a 330ft/100m depth rating and a rotating diving bezel. It also had to be easily legible in conditions of reduced visibility yet aesthetically pleasing. Hence, the Sub’s iconic large luminous hour markers and Mercedes hands set against a contrasting black dial. The Submariner is the most iconic and desirable luxury watch of all time and has been adopted by luminaries such as Jacques Cousteau, Che Guevara, and none other than James Bond. Our favorite Bond, Sean Connery, wore a big crown Sub in the 1962 classic ‘Dr. No’. The watch was also featured in ‘Goldfinger’ and ‘Thunderball’.
