They say you need to dress to impress. We think this Cobra has taken that quite literally. This Audemars Piguet is a spectacular example of the various odd-looking watches of the 1970s.
AP is known for making bold-looking watches, and this ref. 5403BC / 4041BC has a unique appeal on the wrist. This particular Cobra takes that idea one step further by combining 18k white gold with a deep black Onyx dial. The monochromatic appearance of the white gold and Onyx gives the watch a completely different character from its yellow gold counterparts. Add the diamond-set indices and you have a rather striking combination of dark stone, precious metal and diamonds. Due to the fragility of this dial material, finding a pristine one can be a challenge. We are very happy this dial remains in outstanding condition.
The name 'Cobra' refers to the unusual integrated bracelet. It is so well made that it's unclear to see where the case ends and the bracelet begins. This eyecatcher is crafted out of a large number of individual rounded links. It wraps around the wrist like a snake and therefore wears this charming nickname. Even though this is a true conversation starter, the use of 18k white gold in combination with the chosen dial layout makes this Cobra a rather understated execution compared to its yellow gold relatives. Both the case and bracelet are well preserved and show very little wear. The hallmarks are crisp and the case-back serial number has a good readability, confirming this piece has been worn with great pride and is ready to serve you for many years to come.
Both the Cobra and Royal Oak have a lot of shared ground. Starting with Gérald Genta, arguably the most watch famous designer, sketched both of these works of art. Also, the beating heart is the legendary calibre 2121 from AP, an ultra-thin automatic movement most often associated with the very first Royal Oak ref. 5402.
In our opinion, it is more than justified that the Cobra increased a lot in popularity over the last few years. It involves an amount of craftsmanship to manufacture that only a few watchmakers can accomplish. As a result, this line of AP is truly one of a kind.
Dating from 1977, this incredible example comes with an Extract from the Archives from Audemars Piguet, confirming its production details. For us, this fascinating piece ticks all the boxes. Are you the truly stylish person to wear this stunner? This is your chance!
