When you think of Audemars Piguet, there’s a good chance you’re imagining a Royal Oak. But, make no mistake, Audemars Piguet has a distinguished history of producing exquisite dress watches in precious metals.

Round, yellow gold, and a leather strap is usually what comes to mind when we think of dress watches. However, Audemars Piguet thought otherwise in the 1970s and 1980s as evidenced by a wonderful catalog of bold watches with funky case shapes and decadent bracelets.

This piece from the late 1970s takes its inspiration from Patek Philippe’s Golden Ellipse. While Patek’s Ellipse is a perfect representation of classic and rational design—it’s based on the mathematical concept of the golden ratio, after all—Audemars Piguet opted to transform it into an unmistakable statement piece.

The 18k white gold watch features an oblong shaped case with soft rounded corners and an intricately decorated bezel. The fancy detailing of the bezel is complemented by a gorgeous integrated 18k white gold bracelet with a luxurious braid-style decoration. Due to the construction of the bracelet, the watch is suitable for a wrist size up to 17.5 cm.

The swanky look of the watch is further enhanced by the magnificent dial, which features a pleasing pattern consisting of alternating white gold and diamond set bars. The dial is accented by a small applied ‘AP’ logo at the 12 o’clock position and classic dauphine hands.

This beauty dates back to 1978 and is in excellent condition.

Introduction

Audemars Piguet is among the holy trinity Swiss maisons d’horlogerie alongside Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin. Audemars Piguet has a storied history of producing high-complication watches. It all started in 1875, when Jules Louis Audemars and Edward Auguste Piguet founded the company in the heart of the Vallée de Joux, Le Brassus, Switzerland. This pure, rough and wild landscape, with deep, dark forests, ice-cold waters and the omnipresence of rocks and hills, provided inspiration and raw materials for the Swiss watch manufacture to develop the finest watches. Since its inception, Audemars Piguet has specialized in rare, valuable and highly-complicated watches like perpetual calendars, chronographs and chiming watches. Nowadays, the emphasis of Audemars Piguet lies on the iconic Royal Oak line.
