In 1972, Audemars Piguet introduced the Royal Oak, designed by the legendary Gérald Genta. The model challenged almost every convention of traditional high-end watchmaking: a large 39 mm steel case, an integrated bracelet, an octagonal bezel and the now-iconic Tapisserie dial. More than five decades later, the Royal Oak remains one of the most recognisable and sought-after watches in the world.
For those looking for a larger, vintage and ultra-thin Royal Oak, the 5402ST remains the reference to own. This particular example is interesting, having been acquired directly from its first Dutch owner. Beyond the watch itself, the stories always gives the watch an extra touch. The original owner was just 18 years old when his parents gave him the watch as a gift in Zermatt, Switzerland.
The 5402ST brings together several of Gérald Genta's design elements. The 39 mm steel case, octagonal bezel with its exposed screws, integrated bracelet and black Tapisserie dial created a completely new aesthetic for high-end sports watches. The 5402 was also interesting technically, housing the ultra-thin self-winding Calibre 2121 with date indication. This example features an early tritium service dial. At 6 o'clock, the dial carries the later 'SWISS MADE' indication. The watch is a D-Series, indicating that it was produced between 1977 and 1989. Based on the original papers and the owners story, we can establish that this watch sold in 1980.
The overall condition is exceptionally good, with a tight bracelet, a well-preserved case and a clean, spotless dial. This 5402ST is accompanied by the original box and original documentation.
