The first (engraved No.1) 3637 ever made. Always special to offer a minute repeater.

There are few names in watchmaking as historically important as Breguet. The inventions of Abraham-Louis Breguet shaped the very foundations of modern horology: from the tourbillon to the pare-chute shock protection system, from Breguet hands to the unmistakable engine-turned dials that still define the maison today. Yet perhaps the most fascinating chapter in the brand’s modern history is the brief and extraordinarily charming period before the arrival of the Swatch Group. This watch was born precisely during that era.

Crafted in 1993, this yellow gold Classique Minute Repeater Chronograph represents the final years of old-world Breguet; a time when the manufacture still operated with a distinctly artisanal spirit, producing highly complicated watches in very small numbers and with an uncompromising devotion to traditional aesthetics. More importantly still, this particular example is numbered No. 1: the very first watch produced of the reference. That alone would make it significant. But the watch itself more than lives up to the distinction.

The 36mm yellow gold case is a masterpiece of proportion. Later iterations of this model grew in size, following changing tastes of the late 1990s and early 2000s, but this original execution remains wonderfully balanced. It possesses the elegance one expects from a true Classique Breguet: slim enough to disappear under a cuff, yet substantial enough to convey the complexity housed within. Featuring Breguet’s unmistakable fluted coin-edge finishing, one of the most recognizable signatures in all of watchmaking. Far more than decorative, it serves as a direct link to the pocket watches produced by Abraham-Louis Breguet himself over two centuries ago. Combined with the straight lugs it is unmistakable.

Then there is the dial. Few manufactures approach guilloché with the same depth and sophistication as Breguet, and this watch demonstrates exactly why. The solid gold dial is decorated with multiple hand-turned guilloché motifs, each carefully chosen to distinguish the various indications while creating remarkable visual harmony. The different textures catch the light continuously, giving the dial a sense of depth and movement that no flat surface could ever replicate. The silvered chapter rings, elegant Roman numerals, blued steel hand feel classical, yet never old-fashioned. Simply spectacular craftsmanship.

Inside beats a movement worthy of the dial that conceals it. Combining a minute repeater with a chronograph is among the most technically demanding feats in traditional watchmaking. One complication measures time precisely, the other translates it acoustically through a symphony of romantic gongs. To unite both within such elegant proportions requires technical ability. Precisely what Breguet is known for.

It belongs to a disappearing category of haute horlogerie: complicated watches made for connoisseurs rather than audiences. Watches created before marketing departments dictated dimensions and before heritage became an advertising slogan rather than a lived philosophy. To find such a watch from this important transitional period at Breguet is already rare. To find the very first example produced makes it something else entirely.

An extraordinarily important and deeply elegant complicated Breguet, preserved in the proportions and spirit the brand originally intended. It is supplied with a Breguet crocodile strap and yellow gold buckle but is additionally delivered with the original strap it was first sold with, and a deployment clasp. Besides that there is the Breguet box and archive document hand-written by Emmanuel Breguet himself. This paper confirms the sale of this watch in 1993 by prominent Asian retailer The Hour Glass.
