Cartier set the template for the modern wristwatch with the introduction of the Santos-Dumont in 1904. More than a century later, this elegant midsize version remains just as compelling and forward-thinking as the original.

At the turn of the 20th century, men primarily relied on large pocket watches. That changed when Louis Cartier created the Santos;widely regarded as the first purpose-designed men’s wristwatch. In doing so, Cartier not only transformed how timepieces were worn, but also introduced a bold new design language.

Where earlier watches were predominantly round with soft, flowing lines, the Santos stood apart with its strong, utilitarian aesthetic. Its square case and exposed screws on the bezel were radical at the time; design elements that would echo decades later in icons such as the Royal Oak by Gerald Genta. Since its debut, the Santos has remained a cornerstone of Cartier’s collection.

The example presented here is particularly exceptional. Reference 1575 is crafted in 950 platinum: the most substantial of its available configurations. Despite this, its refined proportions of 26 x 36 mm and slim profile preserve an elegant presence on the wrist, aided by the ultra-thin, manually wound calibre 021MC. The dial has the classic design with railroad minute track and Roman numerals. It has a beautiful guilloche finish and is signed "Swiss Made".

Dating to the year 2000, this piece features Cartier’s signature blue sapphire cabochon set into the crown, complemented by blued, sword-shaped hands. It is paired with a striking blue alligator strap and secured by an 18k white gold butterfly clasp.
