A pink 565 with persuasively aged dial.

Introduced in 1938, at a time when prudence was fashionable but practicality was not yet expected from a dress watch; the 565 disrupted the Calatrava lineage. While the earlier Ref. 96 embodied Bauhaus purity, the 565 arrived with a kind of pragmatic audacity: larger, more robust, and ,most scandalously for the era, engineered to survive real life. Its 35 mm case was considered oversized at the time, a bold deviation from the delicate proportions of its predecessors.

About the case... The obsessives will already be nodding. Manufactured by Taubert & Fils: better known under the FB (François Borgel) hallmark. The so-called “Borgel case” is not merely a construction, it is an ideology. A two-piece construction with screw-down caseback. It granted the 565 a level of water resistance that bordered on revolutionary for a Calatrava. This was not elegance for the salon; this was elegance with practicality. One might even say it was the moment Patek Philippe reluctantly admitted that beauty could coexist with utility. The result? What collectors now affectionately (and somewhat theatrically) refer to as the “Grande Calatrava Étanche"; a watch that could, in theory, accompany you outdoors without immediate existential dread. Most 565s were made in yellow gold, this one is in pink gold. Not only is it increasingly rarer, it is also very well preserved with visible hallmarks, strong proportions and the original crown still in tact. It also comes with its correct and original buckle.

Inside beats the calibre 12-120 SC. SC stands for "Second Centrale", which is important to note. The 565 exists with either a small seconds at 6, or this execution; which is much rarer and gives it a cleaner look; complimenting the sporty appearance of the case. A movement that deserves far more credit than it typically receives. Patek employed an indirect central seconds mechanism developed with Victorin Piguet, bringing the seconds hand to the center through an additional gear train.

But let’s be honest; you are not here for the movement alone. You are here for the dial. This particular example carries that most seductive of vintage afflictions: time itself. The raised hard enamel signature, as if Patek wanted to ensure eternity had something to cling to, sits proudly above a surface that has gracefully, evenly, and quite irrationally aged into a warm champagne tone. Not tropical, not damaged, just… persuasive. The kind of patina that cannot be replicated and looks different when viewed from other angles. The warmth of the pink gold case amplifying the dial’s tone until the entire watch feels like it exists in a perpetual golden hour.

It is, objectively speaking, just a time-only watch. But then again, the reference 565 was never really about telling time. It was about redefining what a “simple” watch could be: larger, stronger, subtly more technical, and aesthetically confident enough to age well. You could call it a transitional Calatrava. You would be underselling it.
