Patek Philippe Nautilus reference 3700/1 from 1981, offered in a highly desirable and correct configuration that represents one of the most important steel sports watches ever produced by the manufacture.
This example is fitted with the sought-after “Type 1B” dial, distinguished by its characteristic typography and early production details. The dial shows attractive aging with strong definition to the horizontal embossing with some discoloration in between. It has well-preserved luminous material (tritium zinc sulfide) in both the markers and original hands.
The stainless steel case retains its iconic proportions, with the porthole-inspired design and integrated construction that defined Gérald Genta’s original vision for the Nautilus. Gase geometry is consistent with careful use, preserving the integrity of this historically significant reference. The watch is paired with its integrated steel bracelet, which flows seamlessly from the case and remains a defining element of the 3700/1’s design. It has wider links than its successor, 3700/11, which was launched later. The bracelet shows appropriate wear for its age while retaining structural strength and visual coherence.
Reference 3700/1 stands as the original Nautilus and a cornerstone of contemporary yet iconic watchmaking history. This 1981 example, with its early Type 1B dial and correct components, represents an increasingly rare opportunity to acquire a well-preserved and academically correct example of Patek Philippe’s most influential sports watch.
