This 3800 (one of the first) with highly unusual "Telephone dial" was made for a Patek legend. Who? Well, instead of a case number it reads "A. Banbery". Comes with additional provenance.
In 2013 this watch was passed on to his godson. As we can read in their e-mail exchange, Banbery suggests it might not have a case number because he acquired one as a "test" piece. This theory makes sense as, dated by the movement number, is one of the earliest examples of the midsize Nautilus. This movement number is specifically mentioned in the correspondence and on the service papers, as it just returned from a full overhaul at Patek Philippe's service centre.
During its earlier service in 2013, by mister Banbery himself, the bracelet was replaced for this newer one. But more importantly, it features a very uncommon dial. Only a handful examples have been sold with this so-called "telephone" execution. Due to the stark contrast between the vivid white hands with dito Arabic numerals and grey sunburst background, we suppose this lay-out was used for people who requested a legible dial. Historically it is not uncommon for Patek to come up with solutions for clientele with bad eyesight.
This Nautilus is drenched in history and comes as a very appealing iteration. For the spoiled collectors who want something with not just a story, but have it combined with extreme rarity!
