Introduced as Patek Philippe’s new luxury sports watch following the success of the Nautilus in the 1970s, the Neptune represented the brand’s continued exploration of the elegant sports-watch category.
The Neptune debuted in 1996 with the tagline: “Ideal for sportswear, the supremely elegant Neptune is, at the same time, the perfect dress watch.” This dual identity was reflected in its design. The moderately sized 36.5 mm case, refined dial layout, and elegant leaf hands emphasized its dress-watch sensibility. At the same time, practical features such as crown protectors, a robust engine-turned bezel, and a 30-meter depth rating gave the watch a distinctly sporty character.
The Neptune’s launch coincided with the introduction of the Aquanaut. While the latter quickly became a success, the Neptune never enjoyed the same commercial momentum. As a result, this intriguing hybrid of sport and elegance was quietly discontinued in 2005. Ironically, that lack of popularity has become its advantage today: while Aquanaut prices have surged dramatically in recent years, the Neptune remains a comparatively attainable entry into Patek Philippe’s sports-watch lineage.
This example, from the first year of production, features a 36.5 mm stainless-steel case and a beautifully white dial. The dial is distinguished by a closed, painted minute track at the center, five-minute markers on the outer ring, and large applied 18k white-gold Roman numerals at the quarter positions. Its distinctive opaline finish is further complemented by elegant leaf hands and a discreet date window at 3 o’clock.
It comes with the extract of the archives and the condition remains spectacular.
