Some Rolex watches are instantly recognizable. Others require a second look. This spectacular Cellini ref. 4350 definitely belongs to the second category.

During the 1970s and early 1980s, the Cellini collection was Rolex's place to experiment with designs that looked rather different from the Oyster models the brand is known for. This ref. 4350 from 1981 is a breathtaking example of that approach. The rectangular 18k yellow-gold case is framed by an octagonal bezel. The bezel is perhaps the most striking detail. Its surface has a glossy finish and is engraved with Roman numerals at the quarter positions, while the remaining five-minute positions are marked with fine engraved hash marks. The yellow-gold dial has a minimalistic layout, showing an applied Rolex coronet at the 12 o'clock position together with the clean black text stamped on the dial. This piece is fitted on a charming flat-link integrated bracelet with a concealed clasp, giving the watch a typical Gérald Genta-like appeal. It is a far cry from a Submariner or Datejust, and that is exactly what makes the Cellini so interesting. Inside beats Rolex's manual-winding movement, keeping the watch wonderfully slim, just like a Cellini should be.

Condition-wise, this example is worn with great pride. The sharp, faceted edges of the case remain clearly defined, something that is particularly important with a watch like this. The hallmarks are very crisp, and the same can be said for the engraved reference and serial number on the case back. The integrated bracelet is in equally good condition, with minimal stretch between the links. The dial shows a light patina, adding to the 1980s feel of this gorgeous piece.

For us, the ref. 4350 is one of the most fascinating sides of vintage Rolex. It shows a brand that was willing to step outside the familiar Oyster formula and experiment with shape, proportion and integrated bracelet design. Over forty years later, the combination of the angular 18k yellow-gold case, octagonal bezel and original integrated bracelet still looks remarkably fresh on the wrist. A rather unconventional side of Rolex, and exactly the kind of watch that makes vintage collecting so much fun.
