The Datejust is our bread and butter, but its smaller brother, the Rolex Date, is the perfect alternative if you’re looking for something slightly more special. The Rolex Date comes in at 34 mm, the perfect ladies and gents size. As a matter of fact, 34 mm is our colleague Dennis’ favorite size.Even though this Date comes on a sporty Oyster bracelet, these 19mm bracelets taper quite a bit more towards the clasp than the Oyster bracelets found on Datejusts and Submariners. This gives the watch a wonderful classic look. We also love that the finely engraved engine turned bezel with the polished metal blocks at each hour marker gives the watch an appealing geometric style. This ref. 1501 dates back to 1977 and features a silver sunbrushed dial with 18k white gold elongated stick markers. The tritium dots at the ends of the hour markers have turned to a pleasing cream color, a hue that can also be found on the tritium-filled hands.

Introduction

Rolex DateRolex was the first to introduce a full water- and dustproof case in 1926 by combining a screw down crown with a two-piece screw-down case. The resulting Oyster case has been the basis of the vast majority of Rolex watches since. The 1950s saw the introduction of the Oyster Perpetual Date line. For some context, in 1945 Rolex had released the Datejust as the first ever self-winding wristwatch with a date indication in a 36mm waterproof case. The Oyster Perpetual Date, on the other hand, came in a slightly smaller 34 mm case and has been in continuous production until this very day.
