In the early '60s Rolex introduced the 160X series and together with this series new bezel, case and bracelet finishes were launched. Think of the fluted bezel, the engine-turned bezel, the bark- and florentine-finished bezel. Among these somewhat common finishes there were some rarer ones. One of them being the piranha bezel. The piranha bezel is called this way because the triangular finish looks like piranha teeth. The reference stamped between the 12-hour position is 1605. The inside of the case back is stamped 1601 but has 1605 engraved (or actually, scratched) under it which is something that happened very often back in the day as many case backs were interchangeable. It has a very early serial (52XXXX), which dates the watch back to 1960. The only other 1605 we are aware of has a serial number very close to this one and also dates back to 1960. It could be that Rolex was experimenting with bezel finishes and therefore only made a small batch of 1605's. This Rolex Datejust is carried out in 18k rose gold and is strapped on a President bracelet. The pie pan dial has developed a wonderful patina with a lively pattern of spots. What we truly love are the dauphine hands and doorstop index.

Introduction

Rolex DatejustIn 1945 Rolex created the flagship Datejust to mark the company’s 40th anniversary. This model was the world’s first self-winding wristwatch with a date indication. With the Datejust, Rolex also introduced the iconic 5-piece jubilee bracelet, first in solid gold and later in bicolour and stainless steel. On the tenth anniversary of the Datejust in 1955, the magnifying ‘cyclops lens’ was introduced on the Datejust.111560
