The most iconic Rolex chronograph?
Among all four-digit Daytonas, few references capture the imagination quite like the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona ref. 6263. Every time you manually wind this chronograph, you’re reminded of just how irrationally brilliant it is: spending a small fortune on a steel Rolex powered not by a Rolex movement, but by a manually wound Valjoux caliber. And somehow, it’s worth every cent.
Rolex had long championed the Oyster case and its waterproof qualities since the 1930s. Yet the first truly waterproof Daytona did not arrive until 1965 with the introduction of the reference 6240. Its screw-down chronograph pushers replaced the traditional pump pushers found on earlier models, significantly improving water resistance.
Produced for only four years, the 6240 was succeeded by the 6263 in 1969. Alongside its metal-bezel sibling, the ref. 6265, the 6263 would go on to enjoy the longest production run of any vintage Daytona, remaining in the catalogue from 1971 until 1987. It’s easy to forget just how unloved these watches once were. Vintage Daytonas would often sit untouched in dealer windows for years, eventually sold for a few hundred dollars; sometimes merely as leverage to help move a precious metal model. Imagine your dealer calling to persuade you into buying a “regular” Rolex, only to casually throw in a Daytona to sweeten the deal.
The example we’re offering dates to 1984 and features the highly sought-after silver “Big Red” dial with Soleil finish, named after the oversized red Daytona signature positioned above the six o’clock register. More importantly, this watch has been preserved in remarkably crisp and original condition. The lume plots remain fully intact and have aged beautifully to a creamy hue that perfectly matches the original tritium hands. Its bracelet, fitted with the correct 571 end links, dates to the same year as the watch, and we can optionally supply a period-correct mesh bracelet for an extra touch of vintage charm. The original Mark II “P302” screw-down pushers are still present and so is the Mk3 bezel
.
In short: an honest, beautifully preserved Big Red; ready for its next custodian to enjoy for decades to come.
