From dust collectors to bank account wreckers. Manual wind Daytonas became hot, and this 6263 ‘Big Red’ is Sofia Vergara on a summer day kind of hot.

One of our most cherished iterations among the four-digit Daytonas is undoubtedly the reference 6263. Each time you wind this manual Cosmograph, you’re reminded—perhaps with a smile or a wince—of the considerable sum spent on a stainless steel watch. And notably, one that doesn’t even house an in-house Rolex movement. Instead, it features a hand-wound Valjoux caliber. Yet despite this, or perhaps because of it, the 6263 feels worth every penny.

Rolex has long taken pride in the invention of the legendary ‘Oyster case,’ a hallmark of water resistance since the 1930s. However, the first truly waterproof Daytona only emerged in 1965, with the debut of reference 6240. It introduced screw-down chronograph pushers—a significant upgrade over the traditional pump pushers with internal gaskets found on earlier models. The 6240 was also the first Daytona to feature a black acrylic bezel inlay with a contrasting white tachymeter scale. Despite its innovations, it was discontinued after just four years, paving the way for the reference 6263 in 1969. The 6263 (alongside its sibling, the 6265, which featured a metal bezel) went on to enjoy the longest production run of any vintage Daytona, lasting from 1971 to 1987.

It’s easy to forget how undervalued these Daytonas once were. For years, they languished in dealer windows, collecting dust, until someone—perhaps reluctantly—picked one up as part of a package deal alongside a two-tone Datejust or Submariner. Imagine receiving a call from your dealer, practically giving away a Daytona just to sweeten the deal on a more conventional model.

The example we have on offer dates to 1979 and features a matte black dial with striking white sub-dials. These sub-registers, which are often prone to unsightly discoloration over time, remain beautifully preserved in this specimen. The ‘Daytona’ name, prominently printed in vivid red above the 6 o’clock register, gives rise to the iconic nickname ‘Big Red.’ The printing is sharp throughout, with all dial text remaining crisp and intact.

This watch has been preserved in exceptionally original condition, right down to its MK2 bezel insert. The lume plots are all present and display a warm, creamy hue that perfectly matches the aged tritium in the hands. The bracelet is period-correct, dating to the same year as the watch, and the original P301 pushers are still fitted. In sum, this is a remarkable example—ready for its next custodian to appreciate its enduring elegance, mechanical charm, and historical significance.
