The Submariner reference 5512 marked a turning point in Rolex’s professional line. Introduced in 1959, it was the first Submariner to feature crown guards, laying the foundation for the modern tool watch. Early examples like this one still carry the charm of experimentation, with subtle dial details that would vanish within just a few years.
This 1962 piece features the much-coveted gilt dial, its glossy black surface and golden printing aged into a warm, almost liquid depth. At six o’clock, the small extra dot below the SWISS signature; known as the “exclamation point”, signaled Rolex’s cautious transition from radium to lower-radiation lume. It’s a detail only produced for a short period and one that speaks directly to the evolving history of mid-century watchmaking.
The dial remains beautifully preserved, with creamy tritium plots that match the tone of the gilt hands. Its 40mm steel case is strong, with full lugs and sharp crown guards framing the original bezel insert. Inside beats the chronometer-certified caliber 1560, setting the 5512 apart from its sibling, the non-chronometer 5513.
Adding further weight to this example is its provenance: it comes with provenance documents from its original owner who was a professional skin-diver. A gilt 5512 is already one of the most evocative vintage Submariners, but an exclamation dial with period documentation elevates it into the realm of true collector’s watches.
