The 5512 was introduced in 1959 and production of this reference ran until 1979. Over the course of this period the dial underwent various changes. One of the biggest adjustments made to the dial was the addition of two lines of text above the 6-hour position. “Superlative Chronometer”, “Officially Certified”, two lines of text verifying that the Submariner 5512 was provided with a C.O.S.C. certification. This happened in 1962 when the 5512 switched from calibre 1530 to calibre 1560. Now the dial had four lines of text as it already bore "200m = 660ft" and "SUBMARINER". In 1969 Rolex switched from meters first to feet first. The example we have on offer dates back to '71 and therefore it already has a 'feet first dial'. Also, the 5512 was about $60,- more expensive than the reference 5513, which was not C.O.S.C. certified. This was a big difference back in the days, which made the 5512 less popular, less bought and therefore rare and highly sought-after nowadays. The case is from stainless steel and has a diameter of 40 mm. The bezel inlay has faded to light grey and the luminescent material is lightly creamy.

Introduction

Rolex SubmarinerIn 1953, Rolex introduced one of the world’s first wrist watches geared specifically towards divers: the Submariner. Rolex had to confront a number of challenges when designing its first dive watch. The watch obviously had to withstand significant amounts of pressure and had to accurately measure time spent underwater, which the first Submariner achieved by featuring a 330ft/100m depth rating and a rotating diving bezel. It also had to be easily legible in conditions of reduced visibility yet aesthetically pleasing. Hence, the Sub’s iconic large white tritium hour markers and Mercedes hands set against a contrasting black dial. The Submariner is the most iconic and desirable luxury watch of all time and has been adopted by luminaries such as Jacques Cousteau, Che Guevara, and none other than James Bond. Our favorite Bond, Sean Connery, wore a big crown Sub in the 1962 classic ‘Dr. No’. The watch was also featured in ‘Goldfinger’ and ‘Thunderball’.
