When thinking of the Vacheron Constantin 222, this version won't be the first watch you'll think of. It's a completely different take on the original and well-known design, and that is exactly why we love this Square 222.

Introduced in the late 1980s, the square 222 took the integrated sports watch concept in a different direction. While the original model is known for its flowing lines and signature notched bezel, the ref. 46004 went for crisp geometry, strong bevels and a more angular case. Introduced during the golden age of integrated sports watches, the 222 is often associated with Gérald Genta, thanks to its striking shape and beautifully integrated bracelet, although the original design is actually credited to Jörg Hysek.

The ref. 46004 is a rare sight today. Exact production numbers are difficult to determine, but these square versions surface far less often than the better-known models, and fewer than 300 examples are believed to have been produced. It is a less obvious piece of Vacheron Constantin history, and therefore very appealing.

The two-tone execution on this square 222 works incredibly well, with the yellow gold bezel and centre links adding warmth to the sharp, angular design. The gold continues onto the sigma dial, where the vertical brushing gives the surface a subtle texture that changes with the light. Applied baton markers and a subtle date aperture at the 3 o'clock position maintain the clean and geometric layout, perfectly in keeping with the shape of the case.

Inside beats the automatic Vacheron Constantin calibre 1124, based on the well-known calibre 1121 found in the 222 ‘Jumbo’ ref. 44018. The smaller version of the traditional 222, the ref. 46003, and this ref. 46004 required a smaller movement to fit their more compact cases, leading Vacheron Constantin to use the calibre 1124. This allowed both models to retain the slim profile that is such an important part of the 222’s design.

This example is preserved in like-new old-stock condition, with the sharp edges and crisp bevels looking just as they should. It appears to have been worn only a handful of times. The case and integrated bracelet show hardly any signs of wear, leaving the original finishing beautifully intact. Finding a vintage Square 222 is already an accomplishment, but you might never encounter one in this condition again. This stunner comes with its service pouch and original Certificat d’Origine et de Garantie, confirming that the watch was sold in 1991.
