Audemars Piguet's reference 4100 is for the 5402 what Patek Philippe's reference 3800 is for the 3700: a more-wearable version of an iconic watch.During the '70s, alongside AP's production of the iconic Royal Oak, a reduced-sized version of this watch was launched. While it just measures 36 mm it doesn't compromise anything and maintains a very good wrist presence: it's exactly the same watch with the same robust and bold, yet elegant and sophisticated design in a 3 mm smaller version. This 4100 has the 'petite tapisserie' dial with an applied logo and 18k white-gold applied markers. The stainless-steel case and recognizable, octagonal bezel with white-gold screws. Furthermore, the watch still has its original, unmarked, hexagonal winding crown. Thanks to the thin calibre 2123 the thickness of the case is just 8 mm, which makes it paired with the integrated bracelet a very elegant watch that fits neatly on the wrist. This piece belongs to one of the last serials as it dates to 1980. Not long thereafter, the reference 4100 was succeeded by the 14790.

Audemars Piguet Royal OakIn 1970, Audemars Piguet instructed Genta to come up with an unprecedented steel watch. As the story goes, he found inspiration whilst seeing a diver at work with an old-fashioned diver’s helmet near Lake Geneva. Staying up all night, Genta drew the design for a circular case with an angular, octagonal bezel, eight visible screws, and an integrated bracelet. The Royal Oak was presented in 1972 as the most expensive steel watch available and it caused an uproar: why was a distinguished maison d’horlogerie putting out a sports watch, let alone in such a pedestrian material? Some experts even predicted that the Royal Oak would put Audemars Piguet out of business. Though it took a while to catch on, the Royal Oak is now one of the most iconic and long-lasting watch designs, and has spawned an entire product line. It wouldn’t be the first time that Genta would prove a brand’s owners, customers, and industry experts wrong.
