We really should stop fixating on the octagonal Royal Oak. Audemars Piguet has an illustrious history of making exquisite dress watches as evidenced by this decagonal beauty. While most of the watch industry was being ravaged by the quartz crisis, the 1970s and 1980s were a creative time for Audemars Piguet. We particularly love the bold and funky gold dress watches from that era. Unlike the typical dress watch—round, thin, and on a leather strap—this geometric beauty features a 34 mm decagonal (10-sided) 18k yellow-gold case with intricate braided detailing. This detail is continued on the luscious 18k yellow-gold integrated bracelet and on the decorated jewellery-style ‘AP’-signed clasp. The watch features a champagne-coloured dial with a grainy texture, which gives it a mesmerising stardust effect. The dial is decorated with elegant thin 18k yellow-gold applied stick indices and lovely faceted 18k yellow-gold dauphine hands. A discrete date window is incorporated at the three o’clock position. While most high-end vintage dress watches run on manual winding movements, this baby has all the comforts of a modern watch due to the implementation of an automatic movement. The watch dates back to the mid-1970s and is in excellent condition.

Introduction

Audemars PiguetAudemars Piguet is among the holy trinity Swiss maisons d’horlogerie alongside Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin. Audemars Piguet has a storied history of producing high-complication watches. It all started in 1875, when Jules Louis Audemars and Edward Auguste Piguet founded the company in the heart of the Vallée de Joux, Le Brassus, Switzerland. This pure, rough and wild landscape, with deep, dark forests, ice-cold waters and the omnipresence of rocks and hills, provided inspiration and raw materials for the Swiss watch manufacture to develop the finest watches. Since its inception, Audemars Piguet has specialized in rare, valuable and highly-complicated watches like perpetual calendars, chronographs and chiming watches. Nowadays, the emphasis of Audemars Piguet lies on the iconic Royal Oak line.
