'Oxblood Stella' on a Japanese President bracelet.

The Rolex Day-Date 1803 stands as one of the true cornerstones in the lineage of the Day-Date. Long before the convenience of the quickset mechanism, this reference defined the standard from 1960 until 1978. Within its production span, Rolex explored a remarkable range of variations; yet all shared the same timeless foundation: a perfectly balanced 36mm case, paired with the unmistakable fluted bezel that has come to symbolize the model.

Presented here is a yellow gold example dating back to 1973. After more than half a century, the watch remains beautifully preserved. The case retains strong proportions and the fluted bezel is still sharp and well-defined: exactly what you hope to see in a piece of this age.

Where this watch truly comes to life, however, is the dial. The 1970s marked a subtle yet fascinating shift for Rolex; a period where the otherwise conservative brand allowed itself a touch of boldness. One of the most notable expressions of this was the introduction of lacquered “Stella” dials, produced in a vibrant spectrum of colors by Stella S.A.

This particular example features the highly sought-after oxblood tone: a color that has proven to be both distinctive and widely appreciated among collectors. Its richness is difficult to capture in words; deep, warm, and constantly shifting depending on the light. The applied stick markers enhance its clean and versatile appeal, making it one of the more accessible yet no less special Stella configurations. The thick gold printing remains crisp and full, complemented by beautifully aged tritium lume plots and matching hands. Upon very close inspection, the dial shows some light hairlines; subtle traces of time that remain invisible during daily wear and only add to its character.

Another particularly interesting detail lies in the President bracelet. Stamped with “K18,” indicating the gold alloy, and a “J,” denoting its Japanese origin, it reflects a lesser-known chapter in Rolex production. To navigate import restrictions and costs, Rolex licensed select countries to manufacture bracelets locally. The Japanese examples are especially well regarded, often featuring the so-called “big logo” clasp: something collectors have come to appreciate. This bracelet is no exception, remaining in notably strong condition with minimal stretch.

To make things even more international, this piece currently features a Spanish Day wheel. All in all, a highly attractive and increasingly rare Day-Date; combining honest preservation, a standout Stella dial, and charming, slightly unconventional details that make it just that bit more special.
