Watches and cars go together like peanut butter and jelly. And, what better way to pay homage to a legendary vintage race car than an exquisite skeletonized Audemars Piguet dress watch? If you get your hands on an Audemars Piguet dealer catalogue from the early 1990s you’ll find five exceptional dress watches that share an automotive theme. Now, it’s unclear why AP decided to pay homage to cars in this way, but suffice to say these watches are incredibly rare and oh so cool. These watches featured beautiful openworked automatic movements with see-through dials. On top of these see-through dials, Audemars Piguet placed a finely hand-engraved scene of a historically important race car. This reference 14677 features an engraved Ferrari 315 S against a backdrop of two crossed checkered racing flags. This isn’t any Ferrari 315 S though. The number 532 on the door refers to the car driven by Wolfgang von Trips to a second place finish during the 1957 edition of the legendary Mille Miglia race. This race spanned 1000 miles (hence Mille Miglia) on Italian public roads and was so dangerous that the Italian government outlawed all public road racing after the 1957 edition. The 14677BA is executed in a beautiful 18k yellow-gold case, measuring 33 mm, with fine lugs and a lovely stepped bezel. The beautiful dial is complemented by elegant thin feuille hands and gives a sneak peek at the automatic movement. A sapphire display case back yields an unobstructed view of the ornately skeletonized (take particular note of the “AP” cutout) and hand-finished 21k white-gold rotor. This exceptional dress watch is in excellent condition and comes as a full set with the original box and papers. We’ve paired the watch with a new black alligator-leather Audemars Piguet strap and an 18k yellow-gold Audemars Piguet ardillon buckle.

Introduction

Audemars PiguetAudemars Piguet is among the holy trinity Swiss maisons d’horlogerie alongside Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin. Audemars Piguet has a storied history of producing high-complication watches. It all started in 1875, when Jules Louis Audemars and Edward Auguste Piguet founded the company in the heart of the Vallée de Joux, Le Brassus, Switzerland. This pure, rough and wild landscape, with deep, dark forests, ice-cold waters and the omnipresence of rocks and hills, provided inspiration and raw materials for the Swiss watch manufacture to develop the finest watches. Since its inception, Audemars Piguet has specialized in rare, valuable and highly-complicated watches like perpetual calendars, chronographs and chiming watches. Nowadays, the emphasis of Audemars Piguet lies on the iconic Royal Oak line.
