The popularity of the Royal Oak line has somewhat obscured the fact that Audemars Piguet has a distinguished history of producing beautiful dress watches. This watch might very well be the Platonic ideal of a dress watch. It’s an 18k yellow-gold manual winder, dating back to 1954, with a fine 18k yellow-gold integrated brick bracelet that can fit a wrist with a diameter up to 17.5cm. The elegant 33mm case size is the perfect adornment for an elegant gentleman or lady. The design is simple and very much in line with the emergence of the Minimalist movement in the 1950s. The round case sports a thin bezel, giving the watch a larger appearance on the wrist than its dimensions would suggest. The champagne-coloured dial sports simple gold oblong hour markers and a decentralised seconds hand at the 6 o’ clock position. An interesting detail is that the watch was retailed by Zürich-based retailer Türler, as evidenced by the company’s name appearing on the dial.
Audemars PiguetAudemars Piguet is among the holy trinity Swiss maisons d’horlogerie alongside Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin. Audemars Piguet has a storied history of producing high-complication watches. It all started in 1875, when Jules Louis Audemars and Edward Auguste Piguet founded the company in the heart of the Vallée de Joux, Le Brassus, Switzerland. This pure, rough and wild landscape, with deep, dark forests, ice-cold waters and the omnipresence of rocks and hills, provided inspiration and raw materials for the Swiss watch manufacture to develop the finest watches. Since its inception, Audemars Piguet has specialized in rare, valuable and highly-complicated watches like perpetual calendars, chronographs and chiming watches. Nowadays, the main emphasis of Audemars Piguet lies on the iconic Royal Oak line.
