Cartier released the ‘Louis Cartier Collection’ in 1972 to celebrate moving its manufacture from France to Switzerland. This exclusive line set out to celebrate Cartier’s rich heritage and featured twelve full gold classic and contemporary Cartier models. The most outstanding among the bunch was the Gondole Jumbo.
The Gondole fits squarely with the aesthetics of the 1970s: large, bold, and funky. The Gondole was released in two orientations: vertical and horizontal. This model is the horizontal one. Measuring in at 34.5 x 38 mm, the watch is positively domineering, especially given Cartier’s classic reputation. The inclusion of a stepped bezel gives the watch even more heft on the wrist. Yet, despite its rather large size and bold shape, the dial of the Gondole is classic Cartier through and through. The white dial features the instantly recognizable black painted Roman numerals, painted inner minute track, and the simple painted “Cartier” signature. A discrete “Paris” signature at the 6 o’clock position indicates that the watch still carries the original dial as when it was sold in the brand’s legendary boutique at Paris’ Place Vendôme.
Last but not least, the blued sword hands match the iconic sapphire tipped crown we have come to know and love. The case is executed in 18k yellow-gold and comes on a beautiful brown leather strap with an 18k yellow-gold Cartier buckle. It is rumoured that only 50-70 pieces have been produced in yellow gold which adds to the rarity of this piece.
