An exceptionally rare Cartier model, the “Gouvernail”. French for Helmet and the Italians refer to it as Timone. Whatever country you're from; it is a fascinating departure from traditional watch design.
Cartier is renowned for its unconventional case shapes, often introducing subtle asymmetry or sculptural nuance to captivate the eye. The Gouvernail is no exception. Its perfectly round form is framed by twelve polished pillars that suspend the dial, creating a sense of architectural depth. Notably, the absence of a visible winding crown enhances its clean, almost “sterile” aesthetic, while Vendôme-style lugs and elegant blued sword hands add a refined yet intriguing character. It is, in every sense, an unusual and compelling creation.
These timepieces are extraordinarily rare. Produced between the 1940s and the late 1960s, the Gouvernail was made in a variety of sizes and in different precious metals, including yellow gold, white gold, and platinum. Across all known variations, it is estimated that less than 50 have ever been created.
Equipped with the Jaeger “Duoplan” movement; a remarkable technical solution designed to maximize precision within an ultra-compact form. The movement’s components were arranged across two levels (hence “Duo Plan”), allowing for reduced dimensions. To further preserve the purity of the design, the winding crown was ingeniously placed on the caseback, eliminating any lateral interruption.
The 24mm case - which wears larger thanks to its distinctive Vendôme lugs - remains in excellent condition. It is paired with a new blue leather Cartier strap and fitted with its original Cartier 18K gold folding clasp.
