The Santos began with a practical problem. In 1904, Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont asked Louis Cartier for a watch he could consult without taking his hands from the controls. Cartier’s answer became one of the earliest purpose-designed wristwatches for men, and introduced the square case and exposed bezel screws that still define the model today.
Nearly three quarters of a century later, Cartier revisited the design for a new generation. The Santos Carrée arrived with a sharper case, an automatic movement and a fully integrated bracelet, turning the original pilot’s watch into one of the defining luxury watches of the late 1970s and early 1980s.
This reference 2960, dating to circa 1980, is executed entirely in 18k yellow gold. The brushed upper surfaces are bordered by polished bevels, while the exposed screws continue from the bezel across every bracelet link. It is a complicated watch to finish properly and an easy one to ruin with careless polishing. This example has retained the definition that makes the design work, from the edges of the case to the sharp transitions throughout the bracelet.
The white dial follows Cartier’s classical vocabulary with black Roman numerals, a railroad minute track and blued-steel sword hands. A subtle date aperture at three adds the one practical concession to an otherwise formal layout. The crown is set with Cartier’s familiar blue cabochon, a small point of colour against the considerable amount of gold.
The bracelet deserves as much attention as the case. Its flat links follow the wrist closely and close with the original concealed clasp, deeply engraved with Cartier’s interlocking double C emblem. The automatic movement makes the watch easy to live with, while the dimensions remain equally convincing on a man or woman.
The reference 2960 belongs to the period in which Cartier successfully translated one of its oldest designs into a fully integrated gold sports watch. Few watches from around 1980 look this specific to their era while remaining this easy to wear today.
