In our opinion definitely one of the greatest military issued watches in human history, the Jaeger-LeCoultre Mark XI. A very fine looking, RAF issued wristwatch produced by the strict 6B/346 specifications of the British Ministry of Defence. This distinctive piece dates back to the year 1948 which you can find on the watch’s engraved caseback. (xxxx/48) As far as we know there are only 2,950 pieces made. The watch is made out of stainless steel and in highly anti-magnetic thanks to iron dial and inner case back which creates a ‘Faraday cage’ to protect the watch against high magnetic fields. The watch has a 35 millimeter measuring case with elongated lugs and ‘Fixed bars’ (where the later RAAF issued watches have regular spring bars) in order to prevent the watch falling of a pilot’s wrist. Underneath the domed plexy glass we’ll find the thick iron, radium dial stamped with the ‘Broad arrow’ that was often used by the British Ministry of Defence. On the dial we’ll see the anti-magnetic, luminized square-hour and minute hand accompanied by the bright ‘no-lume’ central second hand. The watch runs on the ultra-precise, chronometer-grade movement 488/Sbr where the ‘S’ stands for ‘Stop’ (hacking seconds) and ‘br’ for the Breguet hairspring where Jaeger-LeCoultre equipped the watch with. When you open the caseback you will find the delicate Rhodium brass finished movement with Geneva stripes (Cote de Genève) which shows the sophistication of Jaeger’s movements. The watch comes with its Extract of the Achieves and is an absolute no-brainer when you see the very reasonable price.
Introduction
Jaeger-LeCoultreThe watchmaking empire all started when Antoine LeCoultre created a machine to produce watch parts in the year 1833. After creating some very accurate measuring instruments in the following years LeCoultre teamed up with his son to build a place where they could put together all the expertise and instrument to build watches themselves. The first ‘Manufacture’ in the Vallee du Joux district was born!In 1903 the Parisian watchmaker Edmond Jaeger challenged Antoine LeCoultre’s grandson, who took over the company, to build a few calibers that Jaeger had invented. That worked out very well over the years and led to the founding of Jaeger-LeCoultre in 1937.
