When greeting a fellow gentleman, you take off your hat. There is only one exception to this unwritten rule, this precious Patek Philippe 'Top Hat' can be left on the wrist.

What immediately sets this ref. 1450 apart is the case shape. The raised central section and hooded lugs give the case the silhouette of a top hat, and it is therefore given its nickname. The warm 18k pink gold case can be identified by the Geneva key number 8 hallmark. This stamp reveals C. Markowski, one of Geneva's well-known case makers at the time, crafted this case. C. Markowski specialized in manufacturing rectangular cases, and the ref. 1450 is one of their most recognizable products.

This pristine example is what collectors refer to as 'pink on pink'. The rose gold case is paired with a rose-coloured dial, a very sought-after configuration amongst dress watch collectors. The dial itself also has plenty of details, starting with the raised enamel lettering, giving a wonderful sense of depth. The long signature 'Patek Philippe Co.' sits much higher than the rest of the dial. The same can be said about the markers of the off-centre seconds hand at the 6 o'clock position. Underneath the layer of enamel, a vertical brushing finish is shown. In our opinion, this fantastic detail accentuates the length of this rectangular case beautifully.

Inside the stunning case sits the hand-wound Patek Philippe movement. Major components such as the bridges and mainplate are individually numbered with a part of the matching movement number. Components related to the case, such as the case back and movement ring, are numbered with parts of the serial number. These small details, confirm all important components remained original to this piece. The watch is fitted with a 14k rose gold bracelet, made by Gay Frères. Although the historically important bracelet itself is not signed by Patek Philippe, it was originally sold together with the watch through the authorized dealer in Curaçao and adds so much to the charm of this specific Top Hat.

Condition-wise, this 1945 Patek Philippe takes the cake. The crisp hallmarks are very visible, indicating very little wear. Also, the outspoken case shape is preserved just so well. To us, this Top Hat is the perfect reflection of the brand's unusual watchmaking in the 1940s. It is ready to be part of a very tasteful collection and comes with the Extract from the Archives.
