The Aquanaut is the perfect business-casual watch, combining the luxurious look of the Nautilus with a sporty embossed dial and rubber strap. The ref. 5060 Aquanaut was introduced in 1997 as the smaller cousin of the Nautilus. The Aquanaut bears a striking resemblance to the Nautilus with its porthole-inspired octagonal bezel with alternating satin-brushed and highly-polished finishes and the highly-polished case. Nevertheless, it has a uniquely sporty look thanks to the rubber strap and the matching embossed black dial This reference was short-lived and replaced just a year later by the bigger ref. 5065. As a result, only about 1,000 examples of the 5060 were produced in either steel or gold cases. The 5060 comes in a well-proportioned 36 mm case on a straight-end, olive-green rubber Patek Philippe strap. The watch comes with original papers, sold in 1998 at Magasin Geneve, so never came with a box. As it was recently serviced by Patek Philippe it also comes with the leather travel pouch..
Introduction
Patek Philippe AquanautThe Aquanaut was first released in 1997 as a Nautilus variant with lugs. You read that right, a Nautilus with lugs. This limited edition ref. 5060J in yellow gold came on a leather strap. Clearly influenced by the Nautilus, it had the same porthole-shape case and similar dimensions as the midsize ref. 3800 Nautilus, but lacked the integrated bracelet and iconic ears on the sides of the case. The successor, the 5060S, was the first proper watch to be advertised as an Aquanaut. This stainless steel Aquanaut was the first to be fitted on a durable rubber strap and black embossed dial with the texture matching the strap, giving the impression of continuity like the Nautilus. The 5060J and 5060S were released in limited numbers only, but were soon followed by the 5065A and 5065J ‘Jumbo’ references with a slightly larger (38 mm) case in 1998.
