Named after the Calatrava cross, the symbol of the medieval Spanish Military Order of Calatrava and Patek Philippe's corporate emblem, this watch is the blueprint for every dress watch that came after it.Putting practicality and functionality front and centre, a Calatrava is traditionally a time-only watch with an understated round case. This 3420 from the early 1960s sports a 34 mm 18k yellow-gold case with elegant short downturned lugs.The classy silvery dial features thin 18k yellow-gold indices with matching needle hands and an elegant de-central seconds indicator at the 6 o’clock position. A cool detail, two Greek sigmas (‘σ’), are hidden at the bottom of the dial. These dial markings were used by select Swiss watchmakers (namely Patek Philippe, Rolex, Vacheron Constantin, and IWC) in the 1970s and 1980s to indicate the use of 18k gold on the dial.The reference 3420 is powered by Patek Philippe's ultra-thin antimagnetic caliber 27-AM 400 manual winding movement, giving the watch an elegantly slim profile.
