Neither round, nor square. The Ellipse, that was launched in 1968, was designed according to the 'divine proportion' or 'golden ratio', which is a mathematical formula that symbolizes beautiful harmony, balance and aesthetic charisma. Not only the Ellipse, but also the best pieces in art, design and architecture like Da Vinci's Mona Lisa, Apple's logo, the Great Pyramid of Giza and even, the nature and human body were designed according to this principle. It was a bold choice of Patek Philippe to introduce such a design but it was positively received by the public. It was subtle and elegant but instantly recognizable. The 18k yellow-gold timepiece we can offer our dear customers dates back to 1991, has reference 3738/100 and is powered by the calibre 240. Not only the case, hour markers, hands and buckle are made from gold, but also the dial is in blue gold. The watch comes on our matching shiny, blue alligator strap with a lug width of 20 mm that elegantly tapers down to 14 mm so that the buckle, which resembles the case design, fits perfectly. This Ellipse comes with its original box and certificate of origin.

Introduction

Patek Philippe EllipseThe Ellipse is Patek Philippe’s second-oldest model - after the Calatrava - and maybe is one of the most questionable but elegant designs the Swiss watch brand ever made. The bold, elliptical case is based on perfection since its design, that’s neither a circle nor a rectangle, was built according to the ratio 1/1.6181, better known as ‘the golden ratio’ or 'golden section'. This ratio was discovered by ancient Greek mathematicians and the most famous masterpieces in art - like the Mona Lisa - and architecture, and even nature and parts of the human body - like the face - were based on this principle of perfect harmony and balance. The combination of this ratio and Patek Philippe’s magnificent design made this beautiful dress watch a worldwide symbol of style and class.
