Some watches define their own geometry of elegance. The Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse Ref. 3605 firmly belongs to that category.

Introduced in 1968, the Golden Ellipse collection marked a radical departure from traditional round watch design. Inspired by the mathematical harmony of the Golden Ratio, Patek Philippe created a case shape whose proportions (1 : 1.618) have long been associated with balance and beauty in art and architecture. The result was a watch that felt both modern and timeless; a refined expression of minimalism during an era otherwise defined by bold experimentation.

This 1976 example embodies everything that makes the Ellipse so compelling. Crafted in 18k yellow gold, the elegant elliptical "Jumbo-sized" case has a great presence on the wrist. Worn on a leather strap, the watch becomes even more understated, allowing the case and dial to take center stage while maintaining the elegance expected of a classic dress watch.

Albeit they made different dial varieties for the Ellipse, the true iconic and classic one is present here. Its deep blue sigma dial carries the small σ (sigma) symbols flanking the Swiss signature, denoting the use of gold for the applied hour markers and hands, a subtle hallmark of quality used by select Swiss manufactures during the 1970s. The rich sunburst blue surface contrasts beautifully with the warm yellow gold case, creating a combination that is both understated and unmistakably luxurious.

Powered by a slim manual-winding Patek Philippe movement, the Ellipse was conceived as the ultimate dress watch: discreet, perfectly proportioned, and executed with perfection that defines the manufacture.

Nearly fifty years later, the design remains just as relevant as when it was first introduced; a testament to the strength of its proportions and the purity of its concept. For collectors who appreciate design history as much as horology, the Golden Ellipse represents one of Patek Philippe’s most distinctive creations. Coming with the original buckle and extract of the archives, dating the production to 1973 and the initial sale 2 years later.
