The exceptionally rare Patek Philippe Nautilus 3800G ranks among the coolest Nautilus models ever produced by the manufacture. Examples crafted in white gold are extraordinarily scarce, making this understated configuration particularly special.

Introduced in 1981, the reference 3800 was conceived as the midsize sibling to the legendary Nautilus ref. 3700. Measuring 37.5 mm in diameter, it retained all the defining characteristics of Gérald Genta’s iconic 1976 design while offering slightly more compact proportions. More than simply a scaled-down Nautilus, however, the 3800 also introduced several meaningful technical changes over its predecessor.

Most notably, the 3800 became the first Nautilus to house an in-house automatic movement, the calibre 335 SC. Unlike the original “Jumbo” ref. 3700, which did without a seconds hand altogether, the new movement featured central sweeping seconds, with “SC” standing for seconde centrale. It may seem like a subtle change, but the running seconds give the dial a little more animation without disturbing the clean and balanced design of the Nautilus. This late movement features the "Poincon de Geneve", as this was introduced in 1992 on the 3800.

Among the different metals and configurations in which the 3800 was produced, white gold stands as one of the rarest. Fewer than 70 examples in white gold are known to us, and these are divided among several different sub-references and configurations, including examples with diamond-set bezels. This particular watch is perhaps even more interesting because at first glance it looks almost identical to its stainless-steel counterpart. No diamonds, no obvious display of precious metal; just the classic Nautilus design executed entirely in white gold and paired with its captivating blue dial with horizontally embossed grooves.

And what a dial it is. Over the years it has aged spectacularly, developing an almost dégradé appearance. The blue gradually becomes darker towards the outer edge, giving the dial considerably more depth than when viewed straight on. The applied baton markers retain attractive creamy tritium, perfectly matched by the original handset. Importantly, both the dial and hands remain beautifully preserved, without distracting blemishes or damage. The white date disc at three o’clock provides the only real interruption to the otherwise monochromatic appearance.

The condition of the watch itself is equally impressive. The white-gold case remains exceptionally crisp, retaining sharp bevels and well-defined edges throughout. The integrated bracelet is particularly noteworthy, exhibiting virtually no stretch; something seldom encountered on vintage Nautilus models and a strong indication of how carefully this example has been preserved over the years. The movement screws attest to its careful previous owner, as they hardly show any signs of contact.

Combining the rarity of white gold with an unusually understated configuration, a beautifully aged dial and exceptional overall condition, this 3800G is one of the more elusive executions of the vintage Nautilus.
