The Air-King is the oldest Rolex product line alongside the famous Datejust. The Air-King was introduced in 1945, in the aftermath of the Second World War, to honor the British Royal Air Force. With its pure, minimalist design and function it is a true cult classic. The ref. 5500 was introduced in 1957 and was in production for a whopping 37 years. The 5500 typically comes with a creamy silver dial with stick markers. We love this specimen because it sports a beautiful glossy black dial with stark white text. This 5500 runs on the calibre 1520 automatic movement, the very same movement used in the ref. 5513 Submariner. As the movement was not intended for chronometer certification it sports the minimalist “PRECISION” text on the lower half of the dial. The stainless steel case measures 34 mm in diameter, the perfect classic men’s size. Thanks to its no-nonsense design, classic dimensions, and black dial, it is the perfect daily watch for a gentleman or even a lady. This reference 5500 dates back to 1969 and comes on a nice and tight full-link Oyster bracelet.

Introduction

Rolex Air-KingRolex and the military have enjoyed a close relationship for a long time. During World War II, Rolex even provided its watches free of charge to British soldiers that were held as prisoners of war by the Germans. After the war had ended, Rolex founder Hans Wilsdorf named a series of Oyster watches in honor of Royal Air Force pilots. The Air-Lion, Air-Giant, and Air-Tiger might not sound familiar as they were discontinued shortly after their introduction. But, one model has been going strong for over 70 years: the Air-King.The Air-King has been refined throughout the years and has received new references. However, all executions have something in common: a simple and classic design, executed in steel, with a reliable no-nonsense movement. The Rolex Air-King is loved by many watch enthusiasts and is truly one of the best deals in town.
