1945, in the turmoil of the Second World War, Rolex released the Air-King to honor the British Royal Air Force. Since then, the Air-King has become one of the most popular watches for special client orders. Until some years ago, Rolex allowed some clients to commission special order watches. The most known, of course, are military-issued watches and those bearing Arab monarchies’ crest dials. However, some corporations, like Domino’s Pizza and Coca Cola, used to do that too. One of the coolest examples of this practice is the Air-King with Winn Dixie dial that we have on offer now. Winn-Dixie is an American supermarket chain that has operated in the southern part of the United States with roots tracing back to 1925. Several variations of Winn Dixie dial Air-King’s exist. This ref. 5500 comes with a “Protective Maintenance” execution dial and was purportedly presented to employees that had served 10 years in the company’s “Protective Maintenance” service.Other than the special logo dial, this watch is like any other trusty Air-King. The watch comes in a sharp no-nonsense 34 mm stainless steel case, is paired with a matching full-link Oyster bracelet, and dates back to 1982. In short, the perfect daily wear with that little bit of southern Winn Dixie flair!
Introduction
Rolex Air-KingRolex and the military have enjoyed a close relationship for a long time. During World War II, Rolex even provided its watches free of charge to British soldiers that were held as prisoners of war by the Germans. After the war had ended, Rolex founder Hans Wilsdorf named a series of Oyster watches in honor of Royal Air Force pilots. The Air-Lion, Air-Giant, and Air-Tiger might not sound familiar as they were discontinued shortly after their introduction. But, one model has been going strong for over 70 years: the Air-King.The Air-King has been refined throughout the years and has received new references. However, all executions have something in common: a simple and classic design, executed in steel, with a reliable no-nonsense movement. The Rolex Air-King is loved by many watch enthusiasts and is truly one of the best deals in town.
