Before turning into the line of elegant and ultra-classic watches, the Cellini collection was Rolex’ experimenting ground with a range of ground-breaking bold angular designs. These early Cellini watches often sported angular case shapes and integrated bracelets that looked a lot like the Royal Oak and Nautilus designed by the legendary Gerald Genta. This is far from surprising since Genta was responsible for the pioneering Rolex King Midas that was released as a limited edition in 1964.Though not designed by Genta, his influence is palpable in this lovely reference 4350 from 1981. The rectangular 18k yellow-gold case features an octagonal bezel, much like the Nautilus and Royal Oak. The engraved bezel—with Roman numerals on the quarters and engraved hash marks on the remaining 5 minute positions—invites some comparison to the Bulgari BVLGARI, another Genta-designed favorite. The watch comes on its original ‘President-style’ 18k yellow-gold integrated bracelet with flat links and a hidden folding clasp. The gold dial is free from clutter and features a simple applied logo and Rolex signature at the 12 o’clock position and cursive “Cellini” text at the 6 o’clock position. The minimalist look of the dial is complemented by elegant thin sword-shaped 18k yellow-gold hands. The watch is in excellent condition with sharp faceted edges, indicating that the watch was sparsely polished over its lifetime. The integrated bracelet is in great condition as well, with minimal stretch between the links. A recent service at our watchmakers ensures that the trusty manual Rolex movement runs smoothly for years to come.
