One of the many things we love about Rolex is that even in the more affordable price ranges there are plenty of gems to be discovered. The Rolex Date was introduced in the mid-1950s as the slightly smaller and more utilitarian brother of the iconic Datejust. The Rolex Date traditionally comes in a 34 mm stainless steel case, although some gold executions exist as well, and usually comes with the classic polished domed bezel. This ref. 6534 was produced in 1957 and is one of the very earliest executions. As a result, it features loads of lovely mid-century details. The dial has patinated to a warm custardy color with brown spotting—known as ‘radium burn’—due to the use of radioactive luminous compound in the hands and the lume plots next to the indices. The top half of the dial features the “ROLEX” signature in applied letters, a detail typically found on watches from the 1950s. The dial, furthermore, sports charming applied claw-shaped hour markers with alternating double pointed baton markers at the 6 and 9 o’clock position. These elegant design cues are continued on the wonderful dauphine handset. As is typical for this time period, the date disc is executed in roulette style with alternating red and black numerals set against a white background. All of this is visible through a cool metal apertureThe 34 mm stainless case is in great condition, especially considering its age, and comes on its original stainless steel riveted Oyster bracelet bearing the date stamp for the fourth quarter of 1957.

Introduction

Rolex DateRolex was the first to introduce a full water- and dustproof case in 1926 by combining a screw down crown with a two-piece screw-down case. The resulting Oyster case has been the basis of the vast majority of Rolex watches since. The 1950s saw the introduction of the Oyster Perpetual Date line. For some context, in 1945 Rolex had released the Datejust as the first ever self-winding wristwatch with a date indication in a 36mm waterproof case. The Oyster Perpetual Date, on the other hand, came in a slightly smaller 34 mm case and has been in continuous production until this very day.
