During the 1960s and 1970s, most buyers in the market for a precious metal Rolex were naturally drawn toward the flagship Day-Date. With only a modest price difference separating the two models when new, the Day-Date’s added prestige and day display made it the obvious choice for many affluent clients. As a result, comparatively few full gold Datejusts were sold, making references like this one considerably scarcer today than their stainless steel counterparts. Despite their rarity and unmistakably luxurious presence, vintage gold Datejusts still trade at noticeably more accessible prices than equivalent Day-Dates, offering tremendous value for collectors seeking a classic precious metal Rolex with all the charm and elegance of the period.
This particular Rolex Datejust ref. 1601 was produced in 1977 and perfectly captures the timeless design language that made the model such an enduring icon. Its 36 mm Oyster case is rendered entirely in 18k yellow gold and paired with the instantly recognizable fluted bezel, creating the quintessential vintage Rolex silhouette. Completing the look is the elegant President bracelet, whose semi-circular links add a refined, jewelry-like character while remaining exceptionally comfortable on the wrist.
We have always had a soft spot for Datejusts from this era. Unlike later sapphire-equipped references, these watches still feature beautifully domed acrylic crystals with a distinctive boxy profile that gives the watch a warmth and vintage charm impossible to replicate. Another hallmark of the period is the celebrated “pie-pan” dial, characterized by its stepped construction and gently sloping outer minute track that descends from the flat central portion of the dial.
The standout feature of this example is undoubtedly its uncommon slate grey dial. Depending on the light, the dial shifts between warm charcoal, taupe, and soft grey tones, giving the watch an ever-changing character on the wrist. The light-colored printing contrasts beautifully against the darker background, while the creamy tritium lume plots have aged gracefully over time, adding warmth and texture to the overall appearance. Combined with the rich hue of the yellow gold case and bracelet, the result is an exceptionally attractive and well-balanced vintage Datejust with a refined, understated personality that sets it apart from more conventional champagne dial examples. Moreover it is strongly preserved and just a great watch to add to your collection or start your collection with!
