This baby combines everything we love about vintage Rolex: an iconic design in great condition, emotions, and a beautiful gilt dial.
Reference 1601 Datejusts are a perennial crowd favorite. With their iconic case design, fine fluted bezel, domed plexiglass crystals, and characteristic ‘pie-pan’ dials, they combine form and function in a neat and classic 36 mm package.
This specific 1601/8 from 1967 ups the ante in several ways. For one, it’s quite uncommon to run into a gold Datejust. As most people that were in the market for a precious metal Rolex opted for the Day-Date option at a slight price premium, relatively fewer precious metal Datejusts hit the market so I guess we can conclude that these are more rare than a gold Day-Date.
The 36 mm yellow-gold Oyster case is in great condition and features the iconic finely fluted bezel, also in 18k yellow-gold. It is paired with a President bracelet with folding clasp. The centre of attention on this beauty however, is the stunning glossy, black, gilt dial with baton hour markers that still remains in pristine condition. To find a dial in this condition on a piece like this is very uncommon and rare. You would even say we've seen more pristine Paul Newmans than a glossy gilt 1601/8 such as this piece right here. All lumeplots are still intact and have turned to a nice creamy hue matching with the hands. The case and bracelet are still in an impeccable condition and the plexiglass even features no cyclops which adds a little uniqueness to this example.
