There are certain references in Rolex history that exist slightly outside the expected narrative; pieces that, while overshadowed in name by more widely known models, reveal far greater intrigue upon closer inspection. The Reference 4134 is one such watch.
At a time when self-winding calibres were typically reserved for screw-back cases, Rolex chose here a different path, housing this mechanism within a snap-back configuration. Just like they did with the more prolific 8171. Oftentimes times these non-Oyster cases were produced with cases manufactured abroad under license, a very small number, this piece among them, were fitted with Swiss-made Rolex cases. For the discerning collector, this distinction carries considerable weight, placing the watch in a far more exclusive category. It can also simply be felt and experienced in the quality and heft.
Unlike Oyster-cased models, the serial and reference numbers are found engraved on the outside of the caseback. Often leading to fainting of both due to wear or polishing. We are happy to conclude that is not the case on this example. It is overall preserved in remarkable condition for an 80 year old timepiece.
Its design reflects elegance that has aged with remarkable grace. The 37mm case offers a presence that feels both contemporary and true to its era, framed by softly sculpted teardrop lugs that lend the watch flamboyant character. The mushroom crown adds a touch of idiosyncrasy, while the dial is composed with precision: leaf hands glide across its surface, anchored by a small seconds register at six o’clock that reinforces the watch’s balanced proportions.
A watch for the discerning gentleman with cognizance.
