Over the years, mostly during the ’50s until the ’80s, Rolex has made many dials with logos and military insignas. Primarily, for the Arab market. Probably, the logo dial started as a special order from a good client, became more popular and finally, Rolex made these dials as gifts for their best customers. Dallah Avco, founded in 1975, is an organisation that provides aviation services. Especially, for the Saudi Ministry of Defense and Aviation. The 16030 – Datejust from stainless steel with a stainless steel, engine-turned bezel and quickset function calibre 3035 – that we have on offer dates back to 1978 and has a silver dial with the Dallah Avco logo displayed above the 6-hour position. The hour markers and hands are from 18k yellow gold while the case and Jubilee bracelet are from stainless steel and this is something we see often with watches issued to Arab countries. This has probably to do with the fact that in the Islam it’s prohibited for men to touch and wear gold ornaments on their skin. However, for most watches issued to muslim countries, the gold is on the dial (hour markers and hands) so the man wearing it isn’t touching the gold. Anyway, this is just a very cool watch with an interesting heritage.
Introduction
Rolex DatejustIn 1945 Rolex created the flagship Datejust to mark the company’s 40th anniversary. This model was the world’s first self-winding wristwatch with a date indication. With the Datejust, Rolex also introduced the iconic 5-piece Jubilee bracelet, first in solid gold and later in bicolor and stainless steel. On the 10th anniversary of the Datejust in 1955, the magnifying ‘cyclops lens’ was introduced.
