Usually, the gold and steel details on the Datejust would be the star of the show, but on this watch the dial takes the spotlight. The 'slate grey' dial on this two-tone Rolex Datejust reminds us of another grey dial. Namely, the one that was specially made for another gold and steel Rolex; the Daytona reference 16523. It has exactly the same brushed finish and colour scheme (grey in combination with gold details). Since the dial that it reminds us of is only seen in the reference 16523, we wondered: "Have we ever seen this 'slate grey' dial on another Datejust?". We haven't and since the other one is only seen in one reference, we assume that this dial was specially made for the 16233.Furthermore, this two-tone reference 16233 from 2000 comes in the classic Datejust packaging: a beautiful 36 mm stainless steel case with an 18k yellow-gold fluted bezel and a matching two-tone Jubilee bracelet. The watch houses Rolex’ caliber 3135 self-winding movement with the handy quickset date function. This Datejust is in excellent condition with a sharp case, lugs and crispy bezel, which indicates it hasn't been polished too often. The Jubilee bracelet is in good condition and has minor stretch.

Introduction

Rolex DatejustIn 1945 Rolex created the flagship Datejust to mark the company’s 40th anniversary. This model was the world’s first self-winding wristwatch with a date indication. With the Datejust, Rolex also introduced the iconic 5-piece jubilee bracelet, first in solid gold and later in bicolor and stainless steel. On the tenth anniversary of the Datejust in 1955, the magnifying ‘cyclops lens’ was introduced on the Datejust.
