We love us some Day-Dates, but sometimes the heart yearns for the simpler things in life.

This ultra-sharp gold Datejust is just the thing to satisfy that desire. Until some years ago, you could choose between a Day-Date and a Datejust if you were in the market for a classic gold Rolex. Although more expensive, most people opted for the Day-Date. As a result, significantly fewer gold Datejusts exist. Nonetheless, prices for gold Datejusts are still lower than your average Day-Date, making them a huge bang for your buck.

This ref. 16238 dates back to the year 1991 and is one of the very first to feature the upgraded caliber 3135 automatic movement. This movement was so sturdy and reliable that Rolex only introduced a successor in 2019, a whopping 30 years after the introduction of the 3135. This 16238 comes in the classic Datejust packaging: a 36 mm Oyster case executed in 18k yellow gold, a matching gold fluted bezel, and an 18k yellow gold ‘Super Jubilee’ bracelet. But, the dial is all but standard. It is made out of Onyx and is set with diamond encrusted 6 and 9, bringing perfect balance to dial; alongside the date window at 3 and the coronet at 12.

The case and bracelet are in impeccable condition, indicating that the watch was barely worn in the last 3 decades. Gold Datejusts are already uncommon, but you’re even less likely to find one in this condition and with this magnificent dia
