Tahitian mother of pearl is one of the most coveted pearl varieties due to its dark and mysterious looks. Pair it with a hefty platinum Day-Date and a sprinkling of baguette diamonds and you’re left with a serious end-game watch.
The ref. 118366 is a special sub-reference of the 118xxx series Day-Date crafted from the 950 platinum. The first thing you’ll notice when picking it up is that it feels substantially heavier than a ‘regular’ Day-Date. That’s because platinum is 34% heavier than 18K gold and a whopping 64% heavier than steel. The use of platinum not only gives the watch a luxuriously hefty feel but the white colored metal allows the watch to fly under the radar.
But there’s one important detail that sets this reference apart from other Day-Dates: the uncommon factory-set baguette diamond bezel. Few things can possibly outmatch the combination of a platinum watch and a baguette bezel other than the exquisite dial found on this beauty.
The dial is crafted from precious Tahitian mother of pearl. The pearl shells that are cultured in the atolls of Tahiti feature a much darker, almost blackish, hue compared to shells cultured elsewhere, giving the nacreous luster of the pearl a cool and mysterious quality.
The Tahitian mother of pearl is complemented by factory-set diamond indices. Typically, Rolex makes use of classic brilliant cut diamonds on its dials, making this baguette variety not only aesthetically pleasing but also rare. In keeping with Rolex tradition, the non-lume dial is paired with a closed (non-lume) 18K white gold handset
This 118366 is in great condition with sharp lines and a tight bracelet. The watch is powered by the caliber 3155 automatic movement with a convenient double quickset function to separately adjust the day and date functions.
Rolex Day-DateIn 1956, Rolex introduced one the most iconic watches ever made: the Day-Date. The Day-Date was the first waterproof self-winding chronometer certified wristwatch with a day and date function. And to top it off, it was only available in gold or platinum! Rolex also designed a new three-link bracelet, known as the ‘President,’ to pair with this special watch. With the exception of the modern ‘Day-Date II’, the Day-Date comes exclusively in a 36 mm case.
