Breathtaking 1803 in red gold, featuring claw-markers on a gilt dial, turned tropical.

Fifties and sixties Day-Date's are (arguably) the epitome of aesthetic perfection. The one on offer here is no exception, even more so; it is proof to substantiate previously mentioned statement. The intriguing galvanic gilt dial with 'Pie-Pan' edge provides a lot of depth; underneath its plexiglass crystal. The elegance of this execution is carried by the index and hands. First mentioned is referred to as "claw markers". When people say: "they don't make 'm like they used to", they perhaps glanced at the construction of this faceted index. Additionally an appealing leaf-handset is mounted. This combination is merely seen in the early 60's and only very few in combination with a dark dial. Overtime the surface speckled, creating a charming pattern on a dial that started out black. The exposure to outside agents resulted in this warm dark brown hue, complimenting the case and bracelet material.

18K Red gold is the alloy of choice here, quite unusual. Rolex discontinued this with the introduction of the quickset movement in 1978. One of the reason: there was too much variety in color; ranging from light pink to deep red. Our 1803 is from the latter category, making it stand out even more. All components (the fluted bezel, the 60's President bracelet and 36mm measuring Oyster case) are kept in remarkably good condition. Even the English day- and the date wheel is still original from this period.
