To the untrained eye, this may appear to be just another black-dialed Rolex. A connoisseur, however, will immediately recognise that this is a rare and highly nuanced collectible.
A white gold Day-Date from the 1960s is uncommon to begin with; certainly when compared to the volumes produced today, and even more so when set against the yellow gold examples that dominated the decade. The early to mid-1960s also marked a brief and particularly appealing period in which Rolex produced black dials using a galvanic process. This 1803 from 1965 belongs precisely to that era.
The dial was manufactured in a notably time-intensive manner, and the result speaks for itself. Its glossy surface has retained remarkable depth, while the gilt “negative” printing, revealing the warm tone of the brass base beneath, creates a subtle contrast that feels rich. The typography is charming, complete with the correct double-dash signature, and the tritium plots have aged to an even pumpkin hue, all intact and well preserved.
The case remains full, with strong proportions throughout. The President bracelet shows minimal stretch, and the fluted bezel still catches the light with sharp definition. Yet, compelling as the exterior details are, the dial inevitably draws the eye back; again and again.
