Are our rose-tinted sunglasses deceiving us, or is this truly a minty pink gold Day-Date?
Few Rolex models capture the imagination quite like the reference 1803 Day-Date. With its iconic case design, elegant fluted bezel, box-shaped plexiglass crystal, and characteristic pie-pan dial, it perfectly balances form and function in a refined 36 mm package. The example we have here today is no exception.
Improving on such a timeless formula is no easy task, yet this stunning 1970 example somehow manages to do just that. Instead of the more common 18k yellow gold, this Day-Date was crafted in rose gold, giving it a noticeably warmer and softer tone than its contemporaries. Vintage rose gold Rolex watches are exceptionally rare; yellow gold and white gold dominated the era. Rolex eventually discontinued rose gold production during the 1970s, only reintroducing it decades later with the launch of their proprietary Everose alloy in the late 1990s. As a result, original vintage rose gold Rolex models have become highly sought-after collector’s pieces.
What makes this watch even more remarkable is its condition. Despite being over half a century old, the case remains full and strong, complemented by a sharp fluted bezel. The iconic President bracelet is impressively tight and still retains its crisp folded clasp. Equally impressive is the matching rose-toned dial, preserved in exceptional condition. The lume plots have aged to a beautiful creamy hue that perfectly complements the lume in the hands, adding even more warmth and character to this extraordinary Day-Date.
